จากการศึกษาแบบ double blind (ทั้งผู้จ่ายยาและรับยาไม่รู้ว่าจ่ายหรือรับยาอะไร) และมียาหลอกเป็นตัวควบคุมในเด็กจำนวน 494 คน พบว่าอาหารเสริมที่มีจุลินทรีย์สุขภาพชนิด Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis ช่วยลดการเกิดโรคท้องร่วงลงได้อย่างมาก และ Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis จะมีประสิทธิภาพดีเป็นพิเศษในเด็กที่มีภาวะโภชนาการต่ำ ในขณะเดียวกันก็มีการทดสอบจุลินทรีย์อีกชนิดหนึ่ง ซึ่งปรากฏว่าไร้ประสิทธิผล

การศึกษาครั้งนี้เป็นแบบ double blind, มียาหลอกเป็นตัวควบคุม, ใช้เวลานาน 6 เดือน และทำการศึกษาในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย โดยมีเด็กสุขภาพดีอายุระหว่าง 1-6 ปี จำนวน 494 คนเข้าร่วมการทดสอบ เด็กแต่ละคนจะได้รับนมแลคโตสต่ำที่มีหรือไม่มี Lactobacillus casei 431 หรือ Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis DSM17938

ผลลัพธ์หลักคือ จำนวนและระยะเวลาการเกิดโรคท้องร่วงเฉียบพลัน โดยมีการวัดอาการของโรคท้องร่วงตามคำจำกัดความโรคท้องร่วงขององค์การอนามัยโลก (WHO) คืออุจจาระเหลวเท่ากับหรือมากกว่า 3 ครั้งภายใน 24 ชั่วโมง และตามอัตราการเกิดท้องร่วงโดยรวม คืออุจจาระเหลวเท่ากับหรือมากกว่า 2 ครั้งภายใน 24 ชั่วโมง ส่วนผลลัพธ์รองคือจำนวนและระยะเวลาการเกิดโรคติดเชื้อเฉียบพลันของระบบทางเดินหายใจ

ผลลัพธ์ที่ได้แสดงให้เห็นว่า อัตราการเกิดโรคท้องร่วงโดยรวมลดลงมากถึง 32% ในกลุ่มที่ได้รับ Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis เมื่อเทียบกับกลุ่มที่ได้ยาหลอก และในกลุ่มเด็กที่มีภาวะโภชนาการต่ำ (มีส่วนสูงและน้ำหนักต่ำกว่าค่าเฉลี่ยในช่วงอายุนั้นๆ) พบว่า Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis มีผลอย่างมากต่อโรคท้องร่วงทั้งตามคำจำกัดความของ WHO และตามอัตราการเกิดท้องร่วงโดยรวม

การดำเนินการอื่นๆนั้น ไม่ได้ส่งผลอย่างมากต่อโรคท้องร่วงตามคำจำกัดความของ WHO หรือตามอัตราการเกิดท้องร่วงโดยรวม และไม่พบว่า มีการดำเนินการอื่นใดที่ส่งผลต่ออัตราการเกิดหรือระยะเวลาการเกิดโรคติดเชื้อเฉียบพลันของระบบทางเดินหายใจ นอกจากนั้นแล้ว เด็กที่ได้รับอาหารเสริมที่มี Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis ยังได้รับปริมาณยาปฏิชีวนะลดลงมากเมื่อเทียบกับเด็กกลุ่มที่ได้รับยาหลอก

การศึกษาครั้งนี้จัดทำขึ้นอย่างเป็นอิสระโดยไม่ขึ้นกับบริษัท BioGaia [http://www.biogaia.com] และมีการประกาศผลการศึกษาในข่าวประชาสัมพันธ์ของฝ่ายวิจัยอาหารบริษัท NIZO เมื่อวันที่ 21 กุมภาพันธ์ 2555: http://www.nizo.com/news/latest-news/56/bovee

ผลการศึกษานี้จะได้รับการเผยแพร่ผ่านทางวารสาร Journal of Pediatrics นอกจากนั้น ดร.ริน่า อากัสติน่า (Rina Agustina) จะนำเสนอผลการศึกษาในการประชุม International Symposium of Probiotics and Prebiotics in Pediatrics (IS3P) ในวันที่ 24 กุมภาพันธ์ 2555
