ที่สถาบันวิทยาการตลาดทุน นายอภิสิทธิ์ เวชชาชีวะ หัวหน้าพรรคประชาธิปัตย์ กล่าวถึงกรณีที่หลายฝ่ายกังวลว่าปัญหาการฆ่าตัดตอนจะกลับมา จากการดำเนินนโยบายการปราบปรามยาเสพติดของรัฐบาล ว่า เป็นเรื่องที่ผู้เกี่ยวข้องต้องส่งสัญญาณให้ชัดเจน ว่าขอบเขตวิธีการทำงานเป็นอย่างไร ซึ่งเป็นปัญหาที่ประชาชนมีความกังวลมากกับอนาคตของลูกหลาน ตนคิดว่า สิ่งที่สำคัญในการปราบปรามยาเสพติดคือ ความต่อเนื่อง จะเห็นได้ว่าปัญหาที่ผ่านมาเกิดจากความไม่ต่อเนื่อง เป็นสาเหตุหนึ่งที่ทำให้ปัญหายาเสพติดกลับมา เป็นสิ่งที่รัฐบาลต้องเร่งดำเนินการให้ครบวงจร

อย่างไรก็ตาม เมื่อถามว่า สิ่งที่รัฐบาลทำทุกวันนี้เหมือนเป็นการเร่งปราบปรามขยายผล นายอภิสิทธิ์ กล่าวว่า การปราบปรามและจับกุมต้องทำ และต้องทำในหลายมิติ ทั้งในเรื่องของชายแดนและเครือข่ายที่อยู่ในเรือนจำ ซึ่งทั้งสองเรื่องถือว่าเป็นปัญหาใหญ่ ต้องอาศัยความร่วมมือจากประชาชนในชุมชนด้วย และต้องดำเนินการปราบปรามไม่ให้เครือข่ายในเรือนจำขยายเพิ่มออกไป ซึ่งรัฐบาลชุดที่ผ่านมาก็ได้ดำเนินการในหลายเรื่อง อาทิ การตัดสัญญาณโทรศัทพ์ และมีความพยายามที่จะขยายผลจากเครือข่ายที่จับกุมได้ แต่หากเจ้าหน้าที่รัฐไม่ให้ความร่วมมือในการปราบปราม ก็ต้องรับโทษมากกว่าคนปกติ

ทั้งนี้ เมื่อถามว่า เป็นห่วงหรือไม่กับการกวาดล้างยาเสพติดที่ทำให้มีการปะทะกันอยู่บ่อยครั้ง นายอภิสิทธิ์ กล่าวว่า ทุกอย่างต้องเป็นไปตามกฎหมาย ทั้งนี้ แม้แต่ พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี ก็มีบทเรียนในเรื่องนี้อยู่แล้ว ซึ่งเขาก็ยอมรับเองว่าไม่ใช่แนวทาง และนโยบายที่ผ่านมาก็อาจจะยังไม่ยั่งยืน
